Nike Site Summit was an active part of America’s first line of military defense from 1959 to 1979, during the Cold War era. Now, Friends of Nike Site Summit (FONSS) volunteers are working with Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson to restore Site Summit as a valuable community resource, part of the Arctic Valley experience, and as a tool to educate current and future generations about the contributions of Cold War veterans, particularly those who served at Site Summit.
Join FONSS volunteer guides who will escort you on this one-of-a-kind hiking tour of Site Summit, showing those buildings which have been preserved since our work began in 2010 and describing the plans and progress on the others.
Weather and conditions permitting, tour participants will hike from the Arctic Valley Ski Area parking lot to the Lower and Upper areas of Site Summit.
Please note that appropriate face coverings are required for all participants who are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Face coverings for all others are optional
The hiking distance will be approximately 5 miles, with a vertical change in elevation of approximately 1,400 feet ascending and descending. Each participant is required to provide their own food and water (32 oz of water minimum).
All hiking tour participants will be required to purchase a JBER Recreational Permit through iSportsman, available at https://jber.isportsman.net/, prior to participating in the tour.
Registration is a non-tax-deductible donation to FONSS. Total registration is limited to 20 participants aged 13 and older only (no babies in carriers) and will close once that limit has been reached. Please leave your dogs at home as no dogs are allowed on the site.
