Every summer, Seward transforms into a hub of energy and excitement as thousands of visitors flood in for its legendary Fourth of July celebration. From the moment fireworks light up the night sky just after midnight, the town shifts into full celebration mode.
Throughout the day, downtown bustles with energy—vendors set up along the streets selling everything from quirky souvenirs to festive noisemakers, and the scent of delicious street food fills the air. Visitors can snack on everything from sizzling tacos and burritos to sweet cotton candy and deep-fried treats.
The centerpiece of the day is the famous Mt. Marathon Race, drawing both runners and spectators from across the state and beyond. But even those not focused on the race find plenty to enjoy, from the scenic beauty surrounding the town to the vibrant community events and competitions. The men’s and women’s course is a grueling 1.5 mile climb up, and back down Alaska’s majestic and treacherous Mount Marathon. Runners from around the world join Seward residents and runners from all corners of Alaska, in the pursuit of a common goal: to win, place, or simply complete this iconic foot race.
Check out the town parade, where floats from local fire departments, community groups, and civic organizations march down Main Street in a colorful display of hometown pride. The street, usually quiet and car-filled, becomes a lively corridor of celebration.
Seward may be a small coastal town most of the year, but on the Fourth of July, it becomes one of Alaska’s most unforgettable destinations.
