Adventure Details:

Welcome to Chugach State Park, where winter transforms the landscape into a snowy wonderland just waiting to be explored. For those craving an afternoon adventure immersed in Alaska’s stunning wilderness, consider a snowshoeing expedition. Trails in Chugach Park offer great views and are quickly accessible from Anchorage.

You can purchase or rent snowshoes at retailers such as REI, Alaska Outdoor Gear Rental, and Alaska Mountaineering & Hiking.

Dress in layers, as you will be active and building a sweat, you want to be able to prevent moisture and getting cold. Charge your phone in advance, and put it in a warm place, such as inner jacket pocket, as the battery doesn’t perform as well in the cold. Make sure to bring water and snacks.

Start at Glen Alps trailhead, and start exploring the trail system. Navigation is easy, as you can follow a trail that is called “Powerline Pass”, so you’ll have a very helpful point of reference.

Wildlife is abundant in Chugach State Park; more than 45 species. Biologist estimate 2,000 Dall sheep 1,000 moose, 40 brown bears, 80 black bears and one wolf pack. Look for moose, hares, lynx, and fox among others.
